Grand-daughter of William Randolph Hearst, media mogul who was the basis of Orson Wells’ Citizen Kane. She was kidnapped in 1974 by a group calling itself The Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), and held for 57 days. She seemingly threw in with her captors, and was caught on tape robbing a bank with them. She escaped an ensuing shootout in which most of the gang perished (when their house burned down) and became a fugitive for nearly a year before she was captured. In 1976 she was convicted of bank robbery and sent to prison.
President Carter intervened in 1979 and had her released from prison. After her release she married her ex-bodygaurd Bernard Shaw, wrote an autobiogaphy called Every Secret Thing a.k.a Patty Hearst: Her Own Story. In 1996 she wrote a novel Murder at San Simeon. She has done some acting, having bit parts in movies such as Cry Baby, Bio Dome, Serial Mom and Cecil B. Demented. In 2001 she had to reluctantly testify against her one-time SLA compadre Kathleen Soliah who had been captured in California after 24 years on the run.
