Alas, yes. He apparently lived what can be referred to as “a self-destructive lifestyle”. In 1992 he had a successful come-back album with Pictures and Paintings before dying in 1995 of a blood clot in his lung.

I enjoyed Charlie as much as any man I ever heard sing. During the 1960’s and 70’s
I had my own Country band and I kept up with Charlies songs and sung them in many nightclubs. He gave me a lot of good times. To bad that he left us so early in life.
