She was the unknown, unnamed subject of one of the most riveting National Geographic photos ever. Taken in 1986, this teenage refugee was photographed at a refugee camp in Pakistan and known only as the “Afghan girl”.
National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry returned to Pakitstan and Afghanistan looking for her in 2003.
She was located living in a remote village in Afghanistan, now in her 30’s.
She lives as a traditional moslem woman, wearing a veil. She is married and mother to three daughters. A fourth daughter died in infancy.
