During the 1980s and early 1990s, Summer’s voice was among the most heard on television, mostly on Saturday mornings. From Penny on Inspector Gadget to Elmyra on Tiny Toons to Susie on Rugrats, Summer was usually cast as the sassy black girl or the impish child. Couch potatoes finally got to match the voice to the face when Summer was cast as Winifred ‘Freddie’ Brooks during the second season of A Different World. She stayed with the show until the show’s 1993 end.
Summer, also a funk rock singer, released her solo album (after disbanding from her band Subject to Change in 1994) in 1999. She constantly does voice-over work for television cartoons, most notably as Foxxy Love on the Comedy Central show Drawn Together. Her most recent voice-over appearance was in Transformers: Animated in early 2008.
