Small, plain-Jane, funny lady began her Hollywood career as a script assistant in the 1930s before enjoying a rather interesting and busy tenure as a comic character actress in dozens of movies and TV shows throughout the 1940s & 50s & 60s before earning the fame she’d always craved in the 1970s as the loving, feisty Grandma Walton in the long-running Waltons series.
A near-fatal stroke in 1976 left Ellen party paralyzed and speech-impaired. But the ever-feisty Ellen Corby returned to the “Waltons” in 1977. Although essentially retired Ellen continued to appear in subsequent “Waltons” reunion movies throughout the 1980s & 90s before her death in 1999 at age 87.
