Coogan was a silent film child actor performing alongside legends like Charlie Chaplin. His parents squandered the money he acquired as a child. In turn, he sued them which resulted in California enacting the Coogan Act which protects child performers earnings. His performance as crazy Uncle Fester in, ‘The Addams Family’ is one of his more notable roles.
He began acting in 1919 and didn’t stop until his death in 1984. Coogan and Charlie Chaplin remained close friends, Chaplin even giving him $1000 when Coogan fell on hard times. He married four times and had five children. On March 1, 1984, Coogan died of cardiac arrest at the age of 69 in Santa Monica, California. He has a star on the ‘Hollywood Walk of Fame’.
