At the risk of sounding like a bad pun (not intended), Steve Fonyo followed in the footsteps of Canadian hero Terry Fox, each having lost a leg to cancer and embarking on a trans-Canada marathon to raise funds for cancer research. Sadly, Fox never completed the journey and succumbed to cancer and passed on without completing his quest. His efforts were not in vain and he inspired the likes of Steve Fonyo and Rick Hansen to undertake quests of their own. Fonyo succeeded in crossing the country over 1984 and 1985, raising over 13 million for cancer research. (Readers are encouraged to read the factscanada.ca article in the references for the full story).
He retired from marathons after a follow-up run across Great Britain in 1986/87 and was awarded the Order of Canadain 1987. Alas, his life took a turn for the tragic, becoming mired in alchohol and drug abuse he suffered from depression and was nearly suicidal. In 1997 he was facing numerous criminal charges including firearms offenses, assault with a deadly weapon, fraud and theft. He received an 18 month suspended sentence, cleaned up his life, going on to study aircraft maintenance and obtain his helicopter pilot’s license. He currenty lives in a cabin on Cultus Lake and is the head mechanic for a limousine company.
UPDATE: His ‘Order of Canada’ was revoked on Dec. 10, 2009, because of “his multiple criminal convictions, for which there are no outstanding appeals”

If he really is a Canada Post worker now, it is probably only a matter of time before Trudeau makes him a cabinet minister.
He is a loser. A bad apple. Everything you don’t want your children to grow up to be. Nothing to be proud of whatsoever. Making excuses for him is pathetic and an insult to other people who have overcome life’s challenges. Just because he has lost a leg does not excuse him from standing tall like a man.
Reading about this man’s life and how it has devolved saddens me.
He started on a noble cause, but his inability to keep his ego in check resulted, even though he was successful, in not being met positively by the public. His offences led to the loss of one of our country’s highest honours. Lack of self control resulted in harm to others and himself. I hope that he is somehow able to make the changes needed to redeem himself.
For all the naysayers and judgers, let us not forget what he was physically able to achieve. May he continue to live out his life with the knowledge that his life has purpose. Sure, he has had more than his fair share of troubles..much his own doing… BUT please do not forget that he did help to raise million of dollars for cancer research. It is a sad testimony to the human condition that when a person falls from grace, their achievements fall with them.
What a marvelous post. Thank you for some well thought out wisdom. Hopefully it will enlighten others so quick to judge. Its important that we look at the triggers. What causes people to seek quick relief? And to remember those people when they were untouched by substance abuse. They were a different person when sober and that’s the real person we should always remember. If you want to help someone make better choices would it be more encouraging to focus on positive or negative things?
First is my thought on The Order Of Canada being revoked. Here is a scenario: A soldier earns a Purple Heart & later returns from war with PTSD due to the horrors seen at war. While under the influence of the PTSD he tries drinking & gets high to ward off the nightmares (his kind of pain). Eventually he is addicted & on the same road Steve was on… Do you believe that what he did to save his unit from a sure death in the war, earning him a Purple Heart would no longer have any value & should be revoked? No, I think not!
I am ashamed of those who do not understand what this man has lived thru… Did you know the drugs doctor’s prescribe for people with phantom leg pain & constant pressure sores from prosthesis that an amputee always has can lead to addiction? It’s true.
No one gets up one day & decides “I think I’ll become an alcoholic, combine it with addiction so I can just **** up my life & hurt everyone who cares about me”. No one ‘wants’ to lose control of their lives & emotions.
It’s known that the pull of the high on drugs is very strong & often leads to relapses… Addiction & alcoholism are expensive habits & thus often include a life of crime. An addict can not control how they are acting out & are thus shunned by society. They become homeless, lose things, are robbed of things, even the shoes off their feet while curled up in a doorway trying to be out of the weather. They get sick & often go days without sleep or food. They become sleep deprived & can slur their words, fall down & pass out right in the most inopportune places. They usually have some sort of weapon as living on the street can be dangerous, sometimes it’s a perceived danger due to drug psychosis… So many die. Yet some survive to re-enter society & live full productive lives. But most of those that do return to the living are rarely accepted back into society easily… So please, do not continue to judge an addict by their past if they no longer live there…
I wish well for all of Steve Fonyo’s victims.
Why are people so surprised? Even while he was doing his run, he wasn’t well received. He was smug, arrogant even, about the fact he was accomplishing was Terry Fox hadn’t been able to. Even though he completed his journey, he was forever going to live in Terry’s shadow as he was a true class act.
All of the above detail merely reminds me of what we were all thinking at the time: What an ***!
I would love to hear from friends and family of his how his condition is since the attack. I heard he is eating regularity again. That is a great sing of hope. He has been through so much. So has his family. I wish nothing but the best for his recovery, physically & mentally, and I hope if he is lucky enough to get through this that he decides to do something positive and change his ways. He was a hero and hopefully, if he is lucky enough, he may have a chance to redeem himself.
how’s he doing after he was attacked in his home in surrey?
His cause was never noble, he was an opportunistic hack who stole money from roadside donations before he ever left Newfoundland. He’s a sociopath and a menace. Anyone else with his record would have been thrown in federal prison a long time ago, he should could his lucky stars that life has been as easy on him as it has for all the pain and suffering and misery he has caused to others
Did Steve ever run in the uk,,,?. I heard he raised over a billion $ there
Just so every one is aware……I was there with Lisa.Fonyo, when she was badly beaten up or any other assaults that she has had with him. I love Lisa she has helped me so much in the past and then some she was always there when my ex’s b.f pat had hurt me and even after my ex’s came to Lisa’s house and smashed out here front window she was still with me as my “sister” & my best friend….. and yes everything that Lisa has spoken of or about is the 100% truth …..
Love ya..Lisa
Love your friend Ashely. ……!!!!
Walk a mile in his shoe
What a complete fall down
I have been thinking about Steve for all these years. I was so proud of him for his run. I am so sorry to hear of all the difficulties he has suffered. I sincerely hope that he is doing well now and is happy. My entire family has died of cancer and I have had two episodes of the disease as well so I am grateful for anyone who tries to raise money for research
etc. Sincerely, Nina
Having just read Steve’s story after his achievements, I am shocked and saddened to learn he ended up where he is. Why? Steve, Why would you choose the things and behavior you’ve had? What a waste! You began an incredible journey but finished so poorly. What happened that you would become an addict.
Melody, why did this happen to him? Just drug addiction or something more?
2011-6-29 tODAY is steves 46th birthday. He is married and living in Surrey. As far as I know, still working as a mechanic and is relatively happy. As family we do what we can to help steve to a point that we can offer assistance. As far as I know Steve is off of drugs and alcohol for the time being. if you have any personal messages to send to him I can forward them to him.

Fonyo’s brushes with the law have been well documented. In 1996, he pleaded guilty to 16 charges for offences in Edmonton, including assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, fraud for writing bad cheques totalling $10,000 to supermarkets and possession of a stolen vehicle. He has also been convicted at least five times of impaired driving and seven times of driving without a licence, most recently in the fall of 2008.
On Aug.13, 2009, Fonyo, who was last known to have been working as a heavy-machinery mechanic, appeared in Surrey Provincial Court charged with one count of assault. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one day in jail. He was credited for 10 days already served. He was also subject to a one-year probation order. But just five days later, the 44-year-old was back in Surrey court, having breached his conditions. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 14 days in jail.
His membership in the Order of Canada was revoked in December 2009.
On January 27, 2010, Fonyo gave a brief telephone interview to CTV News from the Surrey Remand Centre, where he was serving the balance of his sentence on an assault charge after breach of his parole. Fonyo stated it was wrong to have his Order of Canada revoked, as it was given to him for something he had previously done.
On August 6, 2010, Fonyo was again arrested for fraud.
On August 28, 2010, Fonyo married Lisa Greenwood on the Victoria beach where he completed his 1985 run. Initially, several Victoria residents were rallying to pay for this wedding, until it was found Greenwood was an ex-parolee herself.
On March 31, CBC Radio aired a documentary about the aftermath of Steve’s downfall called “Return To Normal”. Did you know he was actually stripped of his Order of Canada Medallion? Sad story.
He is working as a laborer at UBC on the new Biodiversity building
Hi there
I just wanted to keep you fans up to date om Steve, right now Steve is in jail again in Surrey, B.C.
After breaching his conditions time and time again he’s back in jail. Why is he in jail you may be asking yourself? Well this time it is a assult charge.. Not just on anyone but this was on the women he had asked him to marry him complete with a diamond engagement ring and the works. I know this first hand I’m that women. When I first met Steve it was a great friendship and we became really good friends. Talked all the time and he was so easy to talk to that it wasn’t hard to fall in love with him. He kept telling me that he was “crazy about me” and he’d tell all the neighbours and friends the same thing. After a while we decided to move in together. We where both very happy about this next step. But after only a few months I really got to see the side of Steve that no one had every seen. Steve doesn’t trust ANYONE this included the women that he wanted to marry. I had to defend myself everyday to him about everything I did or said that it became a problem. The abuse got physical and that’s when I had to get out quick. Please don’t get me wrong. I admire Steve for what he’s done and he’s really a good man but he has told me about the many problems and scares that the run had left on him that he has never been able to let go of. Steve needs help not only me but my friends and family also saw this too. And it hasn’t been easy to let go of him I really fell for him hard and everyday I think of him and hope someday we can be friends again like we use to be cause I really want the best for him.
thanks

Just to let you know that the last sighting of Steve is incorrect. Diesel don’t have a clue or should I say didn’t have a clue but I’m sure he does now cause he’s a good friend of mine. Steve and I recently had a relationship that only lasted months. We had known each other for about a year and had become good friends when we decided to give a relationship a try and we moved in together in May. Well it didn’t take long to find out that this decission was a big mistake. From may to August Steve had gotten in so much trouble that I had tried to call off the relationship countless times. On my birthday which is in July Steve beat my head in and as I was being taken away in a ambulance the police got in and told me that Steve was not being arrested for it. Just another thing that Steve got away with. Then I tried to call it off again and he came after me again. This time the police took him to jail. He had broken my frount room window to gain entery. And our landlord was already pissed off at us for the amount of times that the police were called to our residence. But each time they had to remove Steve from here. So he now has been charged with assulting me and when he got out with conditions of not contacting me he came straight here and smashed the window of my car and took off in it. The police then again arrested him for breach. And again he was let out just to come back again the police were doing a check and again they found Steve here and arrested him again for a breach to which he is still in custody for today(Aug17). On top of all that Steve has over 3 Vehicles in the city impound yard right now and numerous new charges of driving while prohibited. He has been working on and off at United Truck and Trailer repair for the passed many years and his boss and friend has put up with Steve not showing up, getting countless advances, and the police showing up there for him over and over again but still he keeps him working most of the time.
So just to keep you and all the site vistors up-to-date on “WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO STEVE FONYO” now you’ll all know.

Steve fonyo now getting his life life back together still working as a mechanic at Trans canada Auto and transmission in Surrey Bc.
I believe he is cleaning up floors on a construction site at U.B.C.
Saw Steve (Fonyo) today in Vancouver on the Skytrain sporting a Canada Post uniform. (Answering his cell phone as ‘Steve Fonyo’ and walked with a definite limp).
I don’t think he is a mechanic any longer.
I am a film/tv producer trying to track down Mr.Fonyo. If you have any info please email: jason@resonancefilms.ca
