Don Dannemann, Tom Dawes and Marty Fried met at Lafayette College in Easton, PA in the early sixties and formed a trio. By 1963 they were regulars at Eastern Seaboard clubs. In early 1966, Beatles manager Brian Epstein, got them a contract with Columbia Records, and renamed them the Cyrkle – a moniker coined by none other than John Lennon!
Epstein had them open for the Beatles on the Beatles 1966 summer tour. The exposure sent their debut single, “Red Rubber Ball” to #2 on the charts. The Cyrkle followed up with “Turn Down Day” later that same year, and it reached #16 nationally.
Tom Dawes and Don Dannemann, the group’s lead singers, now head their own advertising agencies in New York, where they started as talented jingle writers. Don Dannemann has written jingles for Continental Airlines and Swanson Foods, while Tom Dawes has had shining success with, among other things, the Alka Selzter “Plop, plop, fizz, fizz” slogan jingle which became a pop culture classic!
