Besides being the first radio DJ to earn over $100,000 year in the early 60’s, he was the star of the TV sitcom Hogan’s Heros.

What happened to:

He went on star in a couple of Disney Films, Superdad and Gus and was a guest host for Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show.
He returned to a regular TV gig in the short-lived Bob Crane Show in 1975, but it was cancelled after 13 episodes.
He then went into live theatre, it was during a run of the play Beginner’s Luck he was starring in in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1978 that he was found murdered in his hotel room. The murder is unsolved to this day. His biographers detail a steamy double-life which some speculate, led to his demise.
